Baby basilisks are small magical creatures that have adapted to life in the modern world, specifically in the way they are hatched. A mother basilisk will sneak into grocery stores, and replace the eggs in the cartons with her own. So when unsuspecting shoppers fill their fridge with eggs, sometimes they will hatch into baby basilisk that imprint on the first person they see. Due to this style of self-domestication, they have lost their ability to turn large living beings to stone. They can still turn small objects to stone, and enjoy doing so with pencils in particular.
